Fortenberry’s seniority earns him a bigger Washington office
BY ASTRID MUNN / For the Lincoln Journal Star
WASHINGTON — With seniority comes better office space.
And with two terms now under his belt, U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-1st, landed a bigger office on Capitol Hill this week.
“We’re very excited,” said Kelly Lungren McCollum, Fortenberry’s chief of staff.
Fortenberry’s current office is on the fifth floor of the Longworth House Building and faces south, away from the Capitol.
The new office is just down the hall but offers more space and a view of the Washington Monument, Lungren McCollum said. The new office has 1,095 square feet — 250 feet more than his old office.
Fortenberry scored the office through a weeklong process that is based on seniority and trickles down to a lottery.
When his turn came Tuesday, his staff of nine was given 20 minutes to select an office.
Fortunately, Lungren McCollum said, his top two picks were still available. Fortenberry ultimately chose the bigger Longworth office over a space in the Canon House building because of its convenient location.
“It’s close to his committee rooms,” she said. “It’s in the middle of the three House office buildings and it’s directly across from the Capitol, which is good for when he votes.”
Members of Congress will be packing up and moving throughout December and early January. Fortenberry’s moving date has not been confirmed, she said.
