FREMONT — A proposed law that would prohibit renting to or harboring illegal immigrants in Fremont, Neb., would now ban hiring as well.

The revised ordinance under consideration by the Fremont City Council now calls for businesses in the city to use an Internet-based system to verify they aren’t employing illegal immigrants.

Under the proposal, the council would have the authority to revoke a business license, permit or contract or recall a grant or accelerate loan payments of a business found in violation.

The ordinance is scheduled for discussion at the council’s meeting Tuesday.

A final vote is scheduled for Aug. 26.

" How is it that Fremont has access to this all knowing internet based system that seems to have escaped the attention of the Federal Agencies whose job this already is? "

" I hope they have spent the necessary money hiring legal services to look into the Constitutionality of the proposed law. A cursory glance from a legal standpoint shows that this law is riddled with Constitutional issues and would unlikely be upheld at any level of review. "

" Anyone with a pseudonymn of Law should recognize that ILLEGAL entrants (they are not immigrants) are criminals who have invaded this country ILLEGALLY. As ILLEGALS, they should have NO rights or protections from the US Constitution. If they want to come here, like millions of other legal immigrants, they should do the applications, background checks etc. to come here legally. Until then, anyone who hires, houses or abets an ILLEGAL entrant should be prosecuted. "

" This is fantastic. Now if the whole country would do this, we'd be set. Look out meat packers, you will have to obey the law now! "

" It's not a "proposed" law. It is THE law!! It is a federal law, that the states are scared to enforce. It is about time someone took the initiative to uphold the law. Kudos to Fremont!! "

" I’m happy that finally someone is suggesting that action be taken against illegal immigration! However, I have zero confidence that anything will actually be done about it. I question what the actual motivation is behind this revised ordinance. Since when do politicians actually care about illegal immigration? "

" If Hormels is using the E-Verify system it does not work. Or perhaps they are just saying they use it. Because they hire from the unemployment office, they claim no responsibility for hiring illegal immigrants. It is time that ICE comes in ad cleans house. Please keep contacting them to let them know that Hormels is breaking the law. "

" You obviously have absolutely no idea about the current status of immigration law. The US Constitution protects all "persons" within the US, including illegal aliens. Look it up before you expose your ignorance. If you are a low-wage, low-education person, there is no way to get into this country legally. There is no line to get into. Again, look it up. "

" so Davi, we are just supposed to continue to allow illegals into this country and make the U.S. the slum of the world, as it is rapidly becoming, just so a few bleeding hearts can say we care about the worlds poor as if our billions in foriegn aid is not enough. "
