Authorities were working Friday morning to remove animal waste spilled on the road in the area of Rosa Parks Way and U.S. 77.

A rendering truck dropped some of its contents onto the road for about a quarter of a mile, said Deputy Fire Chief Bruce Sellon.

Animal waste is considered a health hazard, so the fire department was working closely with the health department and Public Works to remove the mess, Sellon said.

Officer Katie Flood said police sent an officer to the area to help manage traffic after the call came in at 7:07 a.m.

" Why do you need to make such a big fuss about this with your comments??? This "animal waste" could have been someone's pet. Yes, they may cause environmental hazards, but please think before you type... "

" Hey, you heard it right from the fire department, "Animal waste is considered a health hazard..." True, many Nebraskans are not afraid of a little maure, but anything en route from a "rendering plant" I would prefer not be sloshing onto my car. The fide dept also wanted to remind us that fire is hot, water is wet, and that regular breathing is critical to good health, but they were too busy shoveling up all that free fertilizer. ;D "

" If that is a health hazard what about all of the roadkill that lays on the roads for days and weeks is it not as much of a health issue??? "

" central Nebraska you are so right. Used to live there. We have been told this is "against the law" but the law won't do anything about it even when you call in a plate number. "

" What does someone's pet have to do with it? Dead animals breed bacteria, especially when they haven't been out baking on the pavement like roadkill, which helps to desiccate the carcass and kill of some bacteria. Rendered animals may still harbor harmful bacteria. It's prudent to follow up with proper cleanup. "
