Lancaster County District Judge Robert Otte Thursday sentenced a 32-year-old California man to 1 year to 20 months in prison on a drug charge arising from an Interstate 80 traffic stop.

Isaac Trujillo-Bojorquez of Fresno was given credit for 240 days he has already spent in custody.

On Nov. 28, a Nebraska State Patrol trooper stopped the vehicle Trujillo-Bojorquez was driving for following another vehicle too closely on I-80 near the 27th Street exit.

The trooper issued the man a warning ticket, told him he was free to leave, and then asked Trujillo-Bojorquez if the trooper could search the vehicle.

According to court papers, Trujillo-Bojorquez consented to the search. The trooper found about  24 pounds of marijuana in a suitcase in the trunk, according to the papers.

Trujillo-Bojorquez and a passenger, Daniel Villenueva-Lopez, were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

In plea deals, both men later entered pleas of no contest to amended charges of attempted possession of a controlled substance.

A Lancaster County District judge sentenced Villenueva-Lopez, 25, to 18 months to 3 years in prison in May.

" Well thank goodness! Thin kof all the people that could have died smoking marihuana!!! What a relief! --- Seriously, the time has come to legalize it and tax it and stop putting non-violent offenders in prison for years at a time at taxpayer expense. No, I do not smoke pot. "

" Our drug laws are so antiquated it is ridiculous. We need to stop trying to control what people do to themselves. "

" Wouldn't it be interesting to know how much money, so far, between troopers wage, courts, and feeding and housing these guys for this,it has cost taxpayers. If you don't legalize it, at least DEcriminalize it! "

" I wonder ... are our fine troopers and judges protecting the interest of society or the interest of the liquor industry here? Never met an obnoxious, reckless or violent pothead. Met plenty of boozers like that though. "

" Let's get real here - if that weed had made it into the hands of innocent civilians, many people might have died from overingestion of twinkies, falling asleep during a movie, or - worse yet - death from the giggles. This madness must stop. "

" While they stop 1 vehicle carrying 24 pounds of smoke I would be willing to bet there are 10 others that pass on through and never get caught. Seems to me that these people are probably just decoys.
I agree, they should at least decriminalize marajuana. While I dont partake, I also dont see where an occasional joint harms anyone. Alcohol and tobacco are, in my opinion, far worse than a joint. Time for government to quit believing in Reefer Madness and start dealing in reality. "

" Seriously, potheads are so innocuous that theyre kind enough to grant an officer's rerquest to search even though free to leave.
Obviously, marijuana needs decrimalization. "

He spent 240 days in custody before he was sentenced?

Is that normal? "

" Our legal system is completely broken. can any self-respecting person work in law enforcement with this kind of idiotic waste of resources going on around them? Focus on real criminals who harm other people. Judges have more serious work to do than to punish our of state people with Hispanic names while they completely ignore all the local Nebraskan consumers of the stuff. This whole case smells really bad. "

" people aren't believing the lies about marijuana anymore. I have never know anyone to die or commit a violent act while 'high'. why do you think you get a fine instead of jail for less than an ounce. besides out of tabacoo beer and marijuana which of the three has PROVEN medical benifits and isn't chemically addictive? tough question im sure.

the judge is smart no to clog our prisons with marijuana crimes. after all the tax payer pays for it in the end "

" You know what? Just stop...enough. The police have to enforce the law. They don't make the laws, and it doesn't matter how ridiculous they may believe the law to be. It is their job. In your jobs, what do you think would happen if you didn't do the things you disagreed with? You'd be fired in no time. Give the officers a break, they are doing their job. If you don't like the law, then start a petition drive. We have that ability in Nebraska. "
