A little insurance was all Josh Scheffert needed, and his J.C. Brager teammates provided more than enough.

Scheffert scattered six hits over six innings and had a 2-1 lead when Brager broke the game open with a two-out, eight-run seventh inning to earn a 10-1 victory over U-Stop Tuesday at Densmore Field.

“That’s the kind of game that’s fun for everyone,” said Scheffert. “It was interesting and just a fun game.”

Jaydee Jurgensen singled in a run for Brager (Lincoln Southeast), followed by run-scoring singles by Taylor Darlington and Ryan Tarletsky. After an error and a walk loaded the bases, Tye Powers cleared them with a double to right-center field. Nick Dolson, who came on in relief of Scheffert in the bottom of the seventh added another RBI single.

Scheffert, who aided his cause with a first-inning solo home run, said he probably would have left the mound even if Brager hadn’t posted the prolonged scoring spree.

“I pitched three times in the last week, so I probably would have left anyway,” he said.

U-Stop (East) tied the game in the bottom of the third inning when Jacob Thompson beat out an infield single and scored on a double by Anthony Moss. But Scheffert got a strikeout, one of nine in the game, to end the threat.

Alex Lux doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth, his second double of the game, but Scheffert got a groundout and then another strikeout.

Dolson walked a pair of batters in the bottom of the seventh, but Scheffert, who moved to third, fielded a grounder and got a force at third before completing the double play to end the game.

“That last inning was the fourth time through the lineup for us, so we were getting the timing down pretty well,” said Scheffert.

U-Stop pitcher Cam Adams also gave up just six hits through the first six innings, but suffered the loss.
