Republican Senate nominee Mike Johanns said permanent tax cuts and new incentives for small and medium-sized businesses will help strengthen the economy.

Johanns unveiled his economic plan Monday at appearances in Omaha, Columbus and Hastings.

“I have seen the toll high prices and a sluggish economy (is) taking on hard-working Nebraskans,” he said.

“We need to keep taxes low, lessen government interference and invest in our nation’s infrastructure.”

Johanns said he would support investment in rural development, research, technology and infrastructure with statewide access to broadband Internet service.

Training and educational opportunities need to be enhanced, he said.

“Small and medium-sized businesses need the ability to invest in their future growth and job creation, which is why I support allowing them to expense up to $200,000 of their capital investment annually, with a total cap of $800,000,” Johanns said.

“I have been clear in my support for making tax cuts for families and small businesses permanent,” he said.

Johanns received the endorsement of the National Federation of Independent Business this week.

" High prices and a burden of a sluggish economy are the toll of accrued policies Mr. Johanns and Mr. McCain have endorsed for years. Remember the turning lane debacle on 27th that came from his tenure as mayor? As for the international community, rage is growing and additional anti American sentiment because problems associated with Mad Cow went unresolved. High prices have been fueled not only by global demand for oil but higher food (beef, dairy, poultry) prices directly linked to use of corn for ethanol production. The sluggish economy? Republican lack of oversight and greed to make loans rather than to make loans based on facts and data. Johanns has been, and will continue to be a lap dog of his party. He has been comfortable in that role, and fails to shine as a symbol of hope as a viable turn lane for change. "

" what you have been clear about Mike is your support for whoever you think is going to be able to make you more money and more important. How about you start by apologising the the tax payers of this state for every job you started and never finished. try apologising to people that need mental health care services in this state for what you did there. Apologise to farmers for cutting out of washington as soon as you heard hagel wasn't running for relection. Simply put you are a quiter and the worst kind of politician. The kind that runs for election so they can be important, not the kind to actually try to do some good. "

" So Johanns wants to cut taxes and keep spending? Good thing we have an alternative in Kleeb. I don't care about his affiliation, but I can't have any more of this in Washington representing us. Fix the budget, the dollar will become stronger and pay our debts to other countries and the economy will be strong again, then you can cut taxes. "

" Mike says “We need to keep taxes low, lessen government interference and invest in our nation’s infrastructure.” yet he's been a major player in Nebraska government for what, 10 years? This sounds more like the pot calling the pot black... If Mike looks in the mirror he will come face to face with the source of our problems, the image may look a lot like George Bush but it'll still be Mike... "

" A most important question is to ask yourself if you are better off now, is the economy better off than before Mike entered politics? Did Mike assure countries like Haiti, Niger, Sudan were advanced by a compassionate Ag policy? What about the family who has $100,000 or $200,000 medical expenses; would Johanns allow them to expense or deduct these ever increasing costs? And if you, your spouse, a child or parent needed skilled nursing care for years and years; would Mike allow a similar “option” to protect family assets? I don’t think so, but let Mike provide answers. "

" I, too, have seen the toll high prices and a sluggish economy have taken on Nebraskans, and would Mike Johanns like to remind voters who was in charge when this happened? Bush has been President for almost eight years, we've had a Republican in the Governor's office for almost 9 years and the US Congress was controlled by Republicans until a year and a half ago.

10 years ago, I didn't pay $3.50 for a gallon of milk, $4 for a gallon of gas or $9 for a pack of chicken. These prices all went up under the Bush-Johanns administration.

Hey Mike, you worked for Bush, remember? You left the Department of Agriculture without passing a farm bill, which would have helped Nebraskans. You left the Governor's Office without fixing our mental health care system. And now you ask voters to send you to the US Senate?

Thanks for nothing, Mikey. "

" The richer get richer, the poorer get poorer and the big get bigger. Why not try and support the little person in our state instead of letting the big boys determine what you support? Oh that's right, Mike you pockets are lined with the big boys money not the poor ones!! "

" Oh yeah, good ole Mike. Same ole Nebraska politicians, jump from one job
to another thats got more money and power, good health care and fabulous
pension and all the perks! Sure he's gonna butter the business to get
the money and get elected!! Don't be fooled AGAIN!! Notice he could care
less for the citizens of this state, he's out for the BIG bucks!! Its the
individuals that are screaming for lower taxes, but as long as he's got
his millions, who cares!!! "

" Isn't it quite a stretch to go from "sluggish economy" to a bad turn lane on 27th St.? Just goes to show you that libs are getting desparate to resort to that.

Your boy Kleeb doesn't stand a snowball's chance in .... "

" What a Joke Mr Johanns is!, It is not any wonder he pulling the same BS that he tried using the last election and the one before.

He will never be their to finish it so why does he even says things he knows he will never Start?

Good old Mike and the Grass is greener.

My only wish is he would just quite now and do us all a Great big Favor!

GO Scott!!!!! "

" Johanns is just offering more of the same policies that we've had for the last eight years. Those policies have favored the wealthy, added to the deficit and have done nothing to stave off the present recession. If you like how things have been going for the last eight years, then your vote should be for Johanns. If you're willing to try a new direction, you should consider a vote for Scott Kleeb. "

Look at Johanns Record wrote on July 8, 2008 5:30 pm:
" One only needs to see the financial mess that Johanns has left Lincoln in from his leadership as mayor. Not only did his tax cuts result in continuous budget shortfalls each year for the city but his wife was receiving a huge salary from the phone company while doing nothing to preserve and protect the monopoly that was the phone company. Leaving us today with unfair and underutilized access to internet and hi-fi systems that were blocked by Johanns. Today the current Mayor and city council are being required to cut programs, cut jobs and cut services due to his poor leadership and management of the city . . . "

" How you gonna cut taxes while at the same time investing in the nation's infrastructure. I am a parent and am already disgusted with the amount of debt from deficit spending the GOP has saddled my progeny with. How ya gonna justify cutting taxes for rich folks? IT DOESN"T WORK! Pay as ya go, Mike. Big tax cuts must be offset with BIG spending cuts. Where ya gonna cut, MIKE? Are you responsible? Did you get that farm bill done yet? Did you take out the trash? "

Vote Change wrote on July 9, 2008 8:19 am:
" While the posters here have already given at least a dozen good reasons not to vote for Mike Johanns, I would just like to note that our present ag secretary, Mr. Schafer, has issued a blanket ban on "downer" cows entering slaugherhouses out of concern for growing problem of e-coli contamination in the American beef supply. Mike Johanns COULD HAVE issued the same ban, but didn't, and e coli-related beef recalls spiked under Johanns' USDA administration. The GOP mantra of less regulation means that Americans are les safe. "

" He wants tax cuts for people outside of my tax bracket, and most other readers. How do you spend more on infrastrucutre and cut taxes?

ANSWER: Sell the U.S. off bit by bit to the Middle East, India, and China. Sooner or later, they will call in their debts and leave us high and dry. Sounds like a great plan to me.

He says that now, but when we will see what he truly does, if he gets elected. His record doesn't support him following up on a lot of election promises. He bailed on the farm bill, bailed on the state as governor, etc, etc. "
