Police offer tips in wake of SUV incidents

Lincoln Police are still investigating two incidents in which men in SUVs with guns followed women this weekend.

Officer Katie Flood offered several tips for people who think they are being followed:

* Call police right away. In one of the incidents, a woman who was followed in the area of 70th Street and Glynoaks Drive first called a friend and waited 45 minutes before calling police, Flood said.

* Don’t go home. “You don’t want these people to know where you live,” Flood said.

* If possible, drive to a well-lit, populated area. Some convenience stores and drive-thru restaurants are open 24 hours.

* Try to get a vehicle description and license plate number.

Though the two incidents from this weekend were similar, police do not believe they are related, Flood said.

I guess I will carry my cell phone with me when I go on a walk after work!!! I do have a question though... Why would anyone want to rob someone walking? Most people don't carry money on them when they go on walks, I know I don't. "

Every time you wait, then criminals, punks, and even if they are just idiots our screwing around, put a scare into the community. It is better to get them of the street the first time. And you could preventing some other crime in the future. Stay on major streets where they would have to be very brave to do anything in the open. " Not all fire stations are 'safe houses' and our proud firemen need their sleep when they can get it. Follow the officers advice and go to a highly populated area. I had a simliar situation, gun pulled on me while driving and I flew into a Kwik Shop and the guy did NOT follow me in. "

Using my cellphone I called from the parking lot to se if anyone would be able to let me in or come outside to record this report. Finally, after twenty minutes - someone did. " Your important license plate left took about as long as it should have to respond. We have other calls that have priority over a plate larceny and just because there we people inside doesn't mean they weren't on a call already or working on it. We don't drop one call to take another unless it is a very important one. So sorry for your wait. "

"License Plates", how would the police know the person waiting outside was just reporting a license plate theft? They could have had any emergency situation. Making the public wait outside the police dept is dangerous. "

" I made a run to the neighborhood convenience store about 3 a.m. on May 1, and on the way home I noticed a car behind me, making every turn I made. Instead of going home, I headed to the police station. When we got into the lighted downtown area, I saw it was a guy who had been hanging out at the convenience store. I got the guy's license plate number and made a police report. It's important to be vigilant when you're out at that hour. "
