Nebraska Alumni Association cuts Scarlet and Cream

One month ago, the student singing group of the Nebraska Alumni Association, Scarlet and Cream, celebrated its 35th anniversary with brunch, networking and a concert that featured a rousing rendition of the group’s trademark song, “The Way We Were.”

For the 50 to 75 past and present Scarlet and Cream singers who participated, the concert was in some ways typical, director Jon Ranard remembered — high-quality singing, a variety of genres and bits of humor sprinkled in.

“It was something for everyone,” Ranard said.

The fourth-year director had no way then of predicting the news he received Wednesday: that his job was one of seven being eliminated at the Alumni Association, that Scarlet and Cream was being suspended indefinitely as a result of a $500,000 shortfall facing the association.

Ranard knew the budget was tight. He knew his group costs the association more per year — about $80,000 — than any other program outside alumni publications.

He figured maybe Scarlet and Cream’s travel schedule to meet and perform for NU alumni across the country would be reduced, or maybe the singers’ costume budget would be trimmed.

Not total elimination.

But Friday, hours after delivering the news to tearful student singers, Ranard said he knows the decision wasn’t personal and that he’s doing his best to look forward.

“I am not happy with the decision at all, but I respect those who had to make these decisions,” he said. “It’s hard for me. But the real world is: Things like this happen.”

Seventeen student singers and two student technicians participated in Scarlet and Cream this year, and the group had just held auditions for next year.

The group already had begun booking shows for next year, Ranard said, and is working swiftly to cancel those. It’s also mailing letters to Scarlet and Cream alumni, parents and future singers.

“I’m sure there will be many people in the world who will be sad” at the loss, Ranard said.

Students are among those. After learning of Scarlet and Cream’s suspension, singers went out to lunch Friday, several still in tears, said Corey Wallroff, a sophomore-to-be who called the group the best part of his freshman year.

With twice-weekly practices and frequent trips — the group makes 50 to 60 appearances each year at locales from retirement homes to schools to corporate functions — Scarlet and Cream singers quickly become close friends, Wallroff said.

“We’re like a big family. We’re always together,” he said. “We probably know more about each other than some of our families.”

A highlight for UNL senior Jake Ramsbottom was a “one-city-a-day” trip through Chicago, Indianapolis, New York City, Washington and more during a whirlwind of spring break performances.

Ramsbottom, normally not one for extended car trips, loved the adventure anyway — especially getting recognized by Nebraska alumni hundreds of miles from home.

“People hear ‘Scarlet and Cream’ and they think of UNL,” he said. “It makes you proud to be involved.”

Scarlet and Cream students say they’re not giving up on the idea the group can’t be soon revived. They plan to begin fundraising soon, Wallroff said, and are hoping donors may step forward to keep the group going.

The Alumni Association, too, hopes Scarlet and Cream faithful will show support.

“We’re viewing it as a temporary suspension,” said association interim director Jim O’Hanlon. “We’re hoping to find either a sponsor or a donor.”

In the meantime, though, the Alumni Association must continue to tighten its belt.

“There are some things you can’t cut, like the light bill and the heat bill,” O’Hanlon said. “So that’s where we are.”

" See ya Scarlet and Cream. Nice knowing ya. For a school that makes so much money off of football it seems odd that they have to cut your program. I guess we know what is important in higher education at UNL. Sports is where it is at Scarlet and Cream. Quit your singing job and build some muscle and grow big and tall or get the heck out. You don't matter according to UNL. Go back to chorus class!! "

" What a sad day for the University. I had the opportunity to see this group perform for the first time this year and I was very impressed. The committment and dedication these young people put forth is evident in their performance. It was really entertaining. I hope all of Nebraska will step up and support this group with their donations so they can keep being great ambassadors for the University and the State of Nebraska. Surely there is enough money somewhere in the budget to help support this worthwile program. "

" Yeah, this is a shame, but look at from an economic perspective and it does make some sense. Next, don't bring up football in this conversation...football single-handedly SUPPORTS the entire athletic department. If Scarlett-Cream brought in millions to UNL I guarantee it would not be cut. Its not about priorities...its about economic sense. At the same time you're crying about your taxes you're crying about this program being cut! Its cause-and-effect people. You elect a governor who was solely elected on his extreme economic conservatism and this is what you get. Blame yourselves.

On the other hand, I do wish it wouldn't have come to this. Ideally, there would be a donor out there who would help out, but apparently there isn't one. "

The Show Must Go On... or wrote on May 17, 2008 12:23 am:
" It's unfortunate that the Alumni Association is unable to continue funding for this program...that said, does the Scarlet and Cream really need to go away? It sounds as though the participants spend much of their free-time practicing and performing and enjoying what they do with positive audience/public response, and for that they should be commended. However, can we think out of the box for a second before we get out the pitch forks, call for resignations/firings and condemn the people that had to make a certainly difficult decision?

If the program means as much as it sounds, to the participants and the public at large, it should be a relatively short hurdle to pass. Not an endless fall into nothingness as is being suggested. As far as I can see, the only thing missing is an $80k budget. While $80k is not chump change, it is certainly not an insurmountable figure. Maybe the group could have a fund raiser...maybe they could get one or many corporate sponsorships...maybe the public that enjoys their performances so much could donate to the cause. Heck, put some kettles outside of the home football games and make a goal of getting a $1 donation from everyone in attendance. The options are seemingly endless, but if the only way that the groups’ existence can be maintained is through the funding provided by the Alumni Association, I guess the Scarlet and Cream really doesn't mean that much to the group or the public at large.

Is the Alumni Association important in and of itself, or is the mission of keeping the Alumni connected with the University being thrown out like the baby with the bathwater? This sounds a lot like being in love with the box the toy came in, rather than the toy itself. "

" What a disappointment it is for me to hear this news. I was a member of the group for 4 years, the maximum amount of time a singer could contribute to Scarlet & Cream. If I could've been in longer I would have stayed. Scarlet & Cream was a defining moment in my life. It taught me how to uphold a great honor that had been bestowed upon me like a king who was given a throne. That honor was the tradition of the University of Nebraska, it's alumni and all of the great innovations have have come from the university that have positively affected humanity. Each year S&C gave singers, techies, and lovers of music an opportunity that I guarantee was different and more positive than any other program on campus. S&C groomed leaders for our community and abroad.

Budget cuts are budget cuts and things have to go. However I will say this. Although I will always be proud of the tradition that I upheld while I was in the group, it will never clear my heart of the way in which the University of Nebraska Alumni association cast away members each year never staying in contact with them and never asking them to continue to be part of the process of Scarlet & Cream. In the 6 years since I've been in the group I have only been contacted once to understand the financial needs of not only the Scarlet & Cream singers but also the Alumni Association (there is one exception, I did receive a request to sign up for a credit card once a month in the mail for over a year that not only wasted my time but our lands precious resources). Alumni outreach has been one of the other big disappointments other than this news today. There was a one million dollar endowment to be put in place for Scarlet & Cream. I received only one letter asking for a contribution and nothing since. Where's this endowment and how is the Alumni association going to use the money that has been suspended along with the group?

As a community of Alumni and Nebraskan's alike, let's come together on this issue and find a way to continue the positive influence that these kids have on our society. Without the arts, the basis of all creativity, you have nothing. "

Toward that end, I think the current members are willing to work on raising financial support for the program and put on performances to raise funds. I'd like to offer the Grand Hall at no charge for future S&C performances and if you'll attend or have an interest in contributing please go to http://www.grandmanse.com/events-resources.html and go to the Contact tab with your comments or suggestions for how to get this 35-year Nebraska icon endowed. " I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the support and interest in our unfortunate situation. However, we are still the Scarlet and Cream singers and we aren’t going anywhere. We are going through WHATEVER we need to do to get this program back off the ground.
The Ray Miller Foundation is still very much in effect and an independent entity to the Alumni Association. The money that goes into this fund goes to us and not into the pockets of the bigwigs. Also the degradation of Harvey Pearlman is more of detriment to our cause than good. The insults shot at the chancellor do not help us in our struggle to rebuild.
Actions are already in-effect to get the group back off the ground, any questions or comments on this matter can be directed straight to us (The Scarlet & Cream Singers o7-o8) at screamforscreamers@gmail.com. We are more than willing to address any questions comments or concerns here.
Lastly, your continued support of us is greatly appreciated and forever welcome, and we can now, more than ever, use your thoughts, prayers and donations in our time of need.

The piece that I would like to leave everyone who down plays this group as amateur or pointless is that spending countless hours practicing and performing across the great state of Nebraska and the world for that fact builds a bond equal to or stronger than family.

What I would ask is that if your family was haphazardly disbanded because of financial pitfalls, what effect would if have on you? How would that affect you?

Please remember this and be sensitive to those of us who have just lost and extremely important and meaningful piece of our college experience. To my fellow “screamers,” let’s continue to be strong and show the great poise that is signature of Scarlet and Cream!

Their programs are timeless and appeal to all ages.....it was good for everyone. I guess we know what's really important to the University of Nebraska....certainly not the same things that were important when I graduated from UNL. The good news is that Scarlet and Cream will always be alive in my family. My brother and sister-in-law met while singing with the group. My heart felt sympathies go out to all that are or ever were with this program. The people that made this decision need to know what a profound mistake they have made. "

I know there are people discouraged with the apparent spending of the athletic department and the cut of this program. I think it's important to remember there is a church-and-state separation between the two and they are separate budgets. Every day this group gave it's all in those reguards.

The arts are more than just a fun time for the talented ones who participate. I've heard kids from across this state, and even from other parts of the country, who've thanked us for what we do, and pledged to come to our univeristy because of that.

P.S. part of the 80K is for scholorships for the 16 to 20 students who basically donate their time (comprible to any athlete at Nebraska short of maybe the football team) to be a member of this group. "

" My favorite Scarlet and Cream story is about twenty years old. I was a member of a group that hosted them at a once a year meeting. I was totally astounded when they launched into a song I recognized: Paradise, by John Prine.
Apparently no one ever listened to the words they were singing, in that the song is a paean to strip mining, so onerous that Paradise, Kentucky no longer exists. It isn't strident at all, but it is a protest song.
Here were these bright-eyed, fresh faced, incredibly talented and devoted, young people smiling, dancing, and singing their way through lines like:

"Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man."

" I think some of the commenters should have held their tongues.... especially if they have never heard a Scarlet and Cream performance or known a "Screamer" and the kind of time that a member must dedicate to this group.

I'll be the first to say that quite a few of the S&C songs are VERY corny (which is a direct reflection of the director's taste-not something by which to fault the group's members). Also, although it seems that $80K is a big chunk of money out of the Alumni Association's budget, the recruiting and PR value of the dozens of performances the S&C gives all over the state makes that $80K seem more like a wise investment than an expendable extravagance (Not to mention the partial scholarships that I assume come from these funds (please tell me if I am misinformed), which, these students more than earn for the time they put toward practicing and performing and for the personal sacrifices they make for the sake of group). Maybe a compromise could be reached-Obviously there is room for the group's 50-60 performances to be trimmed, offering a small relief in spending.

All in all, I would be shocked if the group was not reinstated. This seems to be a poor decision and I am sure that the Alumni Association will soon realize this. Through a fundraising campaign, the benevolence of a donor, or the arrangement of corporate sponsoring, I am sure the Alumni Association could find these funds if they searched. Perhaps that is what this article was meant to do- pull at the heartstrings of Scarlet and Cream supporters around the state. Hopefully the state will find a way to bring back a group that has established itself as small piece of University tradition.

And finally, give the football program a break. This isn't an example of the university making a poor choice in funding sports over the arts. It's obvious that the football program generates more money than any other university program and in doing so supports the other "non-profitable" sports. Let it rest! Without the funds from football ticket sales we would be outraged at the loss of so many other university programs. Check out this link if you are interested in the kind of impact our football program has on the state: http://www.bbr.unl.edu/documents/athletic_report.pdf "
