Witnesses said a husband went back inside a burning duplex to rescue his wife when fire broke out Sunday morning at 2821 E St.

Nobody was injured in the fire that began at 9:50 a.m., said Lincoln Fire and Rescue acting Battalion Chief Steve Dolezal.

Officials have determined the cause of the fire to be unattended food on the stove, said Deputy Chief Bruce Sellon.

The duplex was on fire when the husband returned after leaving to give someone a ride to work, Sellon said.

The man ran inside, woke his sleeping wife and helped her escape, Sellon said.

Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from a first-floor window and the building’s residents standing outside. The blaze was under control by 10 a.m.

Statistically, when someone runs into a burning building, chances of that person escaping are not good, Sellon said.

“So what (the husband) did was very heroic in one sense, but extremely dangerous in another sense,” he said.

The fire caused about $70,000 damage, Sellon said.
